There are those who consider the Japanese sword to be one of the most perfect blades in history. And while there is no proving that in terms of function, it is hard to disagree that this Kaeru Wakizashi is most definitely a truly beautiful sword. This stunning sword is an absolute work of art, which makes it a breathtaking sword at the best of times. The blade is hand forged from powdered steel and folded to give it a high degree of authenticity, while also featuring a medium length kissaki (or tip). The tsuba, or guard, is crafted in blackened iron and features detailing in gold and silver, which helps to create the scene of a frog on a lily pad. It is from this guard that the sword draws its name, as kaeru means frog. High quality ray skin is used to wrap the tsuka (or handle), while the tsuka-ito, or the overlay wrap on the handle, is premium dark blue Japanese cotton. The fuchi and kashira (also known as the cap just under the guard and the pommel) are black with elegant brass detailing, while the habiki, which covers the beginning of the blade, features a one-piece brass construction. The Saya, or the sheath, is deeply lacquered in black and features an attractive sageo tie, which echoes the frog theme and is elegantly woven in dark blue and moss green fabric, while the kojiri, koiguchi, and kurikata (the furnishings on the sheath) are all crafted from polished buffalo horn. The sword measures approximately 27.75 inches long. A Wakizashi is a traditionally a part of the daisho (meaning big little), which consists of a long sword and a short sword. Thus, the Kaeru Katana (SH2467) is a perfect complement to this sword. Perfect? That might be taking it a little too far. But the Kaeru Wakizashi comes fairly close, if only by virtue of its impressive and the stunningly intricate details that can be seen throughout the Wakizashi construction.
