Description

Be you king or soldier, the Hastings Sword with Scabbard brings a straightforward nobility to the battlefield. Modeled after quintessential swords of the 11th through 14th centuries, this is a functional medieval weapon made for battle. This hand-forged bastard sword is a versatile weapon for medieval reenactments and historical weapons collections.

Sword Construction:

Named for the famous Battle of Hastings of 1066, swords used by the combatants of that battle directly inspired this medieval reenactment sword. This includes both blade shape and hilt design. It also draws its design from Oakeshott Sub-Type XIIIA swords.

Firstly, the blade of this hand forged knight sword is made of 5160 high carbon steel. A full tang, battle ready weapon, this sword is functional for reenactment battles. Choose between sharpened and unsharpened blade options.

Long, broad, and double-edged, the Hastings Sword blade is quite the substantial weapon. It tapers gradually along the length. This lines up with cut-and-thrust fighting styles of the 13th and 14th centuries, resembling a soldiers arming sword.

Then, a double fuller adds detail and reduces weight along three-fourths of the blade. Differential hardening also makes the blade edge sturdy and able to hold an edge without making the sword brittle. This results in edges at Rockwell 60 and a core at Rockwell 48-50.

Next, the hilt draws from bastard sword styles that persisted for several centuries throughout the Middle Ages. Made of mild steel, its fittings are well in line with iconic knight sword style. The straight cruciform guard features a slight ridge at its center.

Then, black leather wraps around and covers the oak wood handle. Textured lines lend extra strength to the grip. The hand-and-a-half length makes it a versatile weapon to wield. Finally, the wheel-shaped pommel counterbalances the blade, thus making it easier to wield.

Scabbard Details:

This hand-and-a-half sword is paired with a matching scabbard made of the same black leather. Polished steel fittings add a sense of finery to this sword that can suit everyone from cavalry knights and Crusaders to soldiers and even kings. Finally, the throat comes to a point, protecting the center of the guard when sheathed. Carry it into battle using one of our leather sword frogs or set it on one of our sword display stands when not in use.

Historical Inspiration:

Named for the Battle of Hastings, this Norman knight sword clearly draws inspiration from swords wielded in that battle. Fought between William the Conqueror and the much contested King Harold Godwinson, the battle determined who would become King of England. William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, rode in with his soldiers and emerged victorious due to the death of King Harold, ending Anglo-Saxon rule in Britain.

If you are seeking a versatile medieval sword with an especially thoughtful design, clear historical inspiration, and careful hand forged construction, the Hastings Sword with Scabbard will serve you well. It suits all kinds of characters for medieval reenactment and is an essential edition to any sword collection.
