Introducing the Forged Winter Sun Katana, a weapon worthy of a true samurai and a reminder of their history. Winter is an enduring symbol of war, death, and darkness in many cultures, and this sword is a reminder of winter’s power.
A Tribute to Bushido
Forged from 5160 high-carbon steel, this katana shows off a traditional craftsmanship dating back millennia. Carbon steel is renowned for its strength and durability. This katana, also known as the Japanese longsword, can be wielded with both hands with room to spare. The katana is designed with a wintry motif.
The blade has been differentially hardened to reveal a stunning visible hamon line. Hamon is the wavy pattern close to the cutting edge of the blade. The sharpened blade has a Sori, or blade curvature, just like real uchigatana from feudal Japanese history. The uchigatana is another traditional term for describing a slightly curved Japanese katana. Designed for the modern samurai warrior, the blade has the iconic bohi along the blade, also known as the fuller. This fuller removes extra weight from the blade without compromising its speed or strength.
Further down, the silver habaki, or blade collar is anchored to the guard by the notched seppa. Seppa are two small washers placed on both sides of the crossguard. In between the guard and the handle is a silver grooved fuchi, also known as the collar between the blade and the hilt.
The tsuba crossguard is fashioned to resemble the mokko gata style, also known as a four-lobed guard. This lobed guard has an opening in the middle that houses the blade, called the Nakago-ana. Around this opening are Sekigane, fillers designed to add a weathered, vintage look. On one side of the blade opening is a Hitsu-ana, a cut-out detail in the guard. The guard has white snowflakes in the motif for wintry detail.
Moving down the hilt, the handle is wrapped in black tsuka-ito cord over real white ray skin. Embossed on the pebbled ray skin is a silver snowflake menuki. Menuki refers to the decoration on the handle just underneath the tsuka-ito wrapping. At the bottom, the hilt is wrapped through a silver kashira pommel. The silver blade, handle fittings, and the black wrapping contrast magnificently with the white pebbled ray skin.
This winter sun katana comes with a black lacquered saya scabbard. The scabbard has a sageo, aka a cord tied around the scabbard for tying onto your belt. The sageo is tied to a kurigata, known as the protrusion on the scabbard. This protrusion’s notched golden spacer adds regal detail. Please note the cords on the scabbard and the handle may not be as pictured.
